IN the extensive literature of Theosophy this little work stands out for certain specially marked characteristics. It records an attempt to describe the Invisible World in the same manner that a botanist would describe some new territory on this globe not explored by any previous botanist.

Most works dealing with Mysticism and Occultism are characterised by the lack of a scientific presentation, such as is exacted in every department of science. They give us far more the significance of things, rather than descriptions of the things themselves. In this little book the author approaches the Invisible World from the modern standpoint of science.

The first point which it is necessary to make clear in describing this astral plane is its absolute reality. In using that word I am not speaking from that metaphysical standpoint from which all but the One Unmanifested is unreal because impermanent; I am using the word in its plain, every-day sense, and I mean by it that the objects and inhabitants of the astral plane are real in exactly the same way as our own bodies, our furniture, our houses or monuments are real – as real as Charing Cross, to quote an expressive remark from one of the earliest Theosophical works. They will no more endure for ever than will objects on the physical plane, but they are nevertheless realities from our point of view while they last – realities which we cannot afford to ignore merely because the majority of mankind is as yet unconscious, or but vaguely conscious, of their existence.

If you are well acqainted with Theosophy, then this book is probably very helpful. I have read some Theosophical literature, but was still not acqainted with all the terminology, which is, as in most Theosophical writings, diverse and oft obscure. The book is thorough, in regards to the subject, but uses, let us say, scholarly occult language (it is heady). I am not sure I believed everything, as it does not all line up with a thorough study of near death experiences and paranormal phenomenon, but enough of it matches up to be crediable, perhaps moreso than most books on the subject. All in all, I learned a lot, but it was a difficult read and I often became bored, tired, or literaly sick (my bullshat detectors kept going off). Older Theosophical writings also have a rather elitist, racist, condescending/smug, and hoity-toity way of viewing spirituality, and many of the Spiritualistic practices of that era (from which this book arises) were often proven to be fraudualent trickery and illusion (money-making schemes). I am not saying that all spiritualists are deceptive, as many are well meaning, and some are evey legit (eg. not entirely delusional), and I think most genuinely try or think they are in contact with something. Most are at least in contact with subconscious parts of themselves. Neither here nor there, the book is helpful for serious students, but it is not perhaps beneficial for non-intellectuals.

The Astral Plane edition by C W Leadbeater Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This book was originally written in 1895. A lot of times books written back then are overly flowery and poetic, and frankly feel like fluff to read, but this book gets down to brass tacks---very detailed and precise---without too much fuzz and it's well written and not presumptious or arrogant. The author is basically writing about what the astroplane is like, to the conscious observer. We all go there every night of course, but most of us are either blind to most of what is around us, or we simply cannot remember or only vaguely remember what happened while we were there, but the author and some of his students compiled a tome of agreed upon phenomena that at least two of them experienced. This includes what it looks like when you're there an in an observant state, where it's located geographically, the various inhabitants and visitors that can be found there, the laws that govern that domain, how long it takes to learn to "see" and recall your dreams (approximately 40 days if you work really hard at it). And many other interesting subtopics, including the scenery, the aura, characteristics of astal vision, records in astral matter, degrees of materiality, inhabitants including the living and the dead, the pupil awaiting reincarnation, the shade, the shell, the suicide, the victim of sudden death, the vampire, the werewolf, the grey world, the black magician after death, non-humans, elementals, animals, nature spirits, fairies, guardian angels and human artificials, (and more) then it moves on to discuss ghosts, hauntings, seances, clairvoyance, second sight, etheric currents etc etc. I bought this book about 6 years ago and it's one of the few I will never give up because it's so unique and informative. It is is very small. 183 pages but they are tiny pages so it's more like... maybe a 50-75 page standard paper back. This in not a book about astral projection----it doesn't tell you HOW to do it. Basically it fills in for you what you missed while you were in the astral plane, and were asleep and it does it in a very realistic, and straight forward way. It's very similar to the Astral Body by A.E. Powell, (written 32 years later and borrows heavily from The Astroplane) but I liked The Astral Plane better. It has more information. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in this subject matter.
The book "the Astral Plane" by Leadbeater is so interesting and looks like a great read- but on I haven't even gotten through the first chapter! When I read I like to take my book wherever I go, uninterrupted, and the version for a desktop just does not cut it! If you have a pad or Laptop, it might be okay, but don't buy the version for a study such as "the Astral Plane" for a desktop unless you want to sit there for hours. No, you cannot print sections to read elsewhere, either.

Very detailed and interesting information in this book,l however. If you like Theosophy or the afterlife, this is a wonderful book.
Overall, there is some very good information in this book, but it takes awhile to unearth any of it, given the writing style of the early 20th century which tends towards prose. But the biggest hindrance was by far the fact that this is a photocopy, and a very poor one at that! Some pages are barely legible because the print is so very light. I can't speak for the other versions that are available on . I opted for this one because of the lower price, so either I got what I paid for, or the rest are like this as well. Save yourself some cash and trouble -- google Theosophy manual 5 and read it online!
Find out about the life after this life that has been kept secret by the
religions of the western world. Very enlightening.
Be prepared to have your ignorance exposed and the truth about life after death revealed.

This is a book that I lost somewhere. When I saw it on I decided to return it to my reading library. I think Leadbeater was the real deal. He could see what he wrote about. The book is old fashioned in that it does not have the writing style of more modern day books, but it is packed with information that should satisfy the reader interested in this topic. Highly recommended.
